transforming a house into a home (week five)

In January I started a series called ‘Transforming a house into a home’ that was designed to give you a glimpse into our home. Each week I focused on different sections of the house, walking you through the thought process behind it, and the sources for some of the decor.

Shortly after the week four post went live, our lives got chaotic. It came to my attention that I did not share quite a few rooms and because of that, I will be picking back up and finishing the series.

Today we explore the laundry room, which for some may seem unexciting, but for us.. it is one of the hubs of our home. It is the command center. We enter and exit through the garage which leads you right through the laundry room. It is the command center of our home.

Originally, our laundry room housed a side by side washer and dryer with the builders grade white wire shelf across the wall over the appliances. Not functional at all and definitely not a good use of space.

With the help of my father in law and his contractor friend, I designed my dream laundry room and they built it.

When I was designing this storage unit, it was really important to me to make sure it included everything I wanted. Things like shoe storage, space for baskets, folding table, and out of reach shelves for the cleaning products + chemicals.

I searched on the infamous Pinterest for some inspiration until drawing up this. It includes cubbies for the laundry products, a folding table, a drying rack, space for baskets that hold extra vacuum hoses, tiered shelving for shoes, etc. etc. etc.

When you come in from the kitchen this is your view. The coat racks which houses all the kids jackets, backpacks, wet bags, and sports equipment as well as the diaper bag and a laundry bag.

We also keep our calendar on this dry erase board (when I remember to update it), plus any keys we have and a basket of everyones sunglasses for quick grab.

When walking in from the garage you are greeted by the stacked washer and dryer which was a must have to save space. They built the unit around the appliances to give it a real built in feel. There was so much attention to detail put into this storage unit and it is easily one of my favorite things in our home.

The other space I am going to share today is the craft room/my office.

In our previous home we had a formal living room type space that we used as the craft room. When we moved into this house, the designated office space became a formal office with the more business related things. It holds any important documents and it is where Michael works from when he needs to work at home.

After a few months of living here, we realized that if our guests stayed over (very uncommon) they would always end up crashing on the couch. This brought up the idea of turning the fourth bedroom into a craft room space for me instead.

This space is heaven to my children as it holds all of the craft supplies that they crave using. They also greatly enjoy the center table because they are allowed to use their creative freedom and it is okay if they get paint on the table. In fact, it has become its own little masterpiece.

For my birthday two years ago we bought and spent the day putting together shelving and building tables. Then I spent another year very slowly buying storage containers, decorations, and really moving into the room. Now it is the prime spot for me to blog, handle MOMS Club business, craft with the kids, and make whatever crafts I may be working on.

Then there is the corner desk which holds all of my files, deadlines, companies I am working with, MOMS Club information, and to do lists and basically everything I do.

It may not look like much to some, but it gives me life to have this space for myself to sit down and create. Whether it is on the computer, with the Cricut, with paint, or something in between.. this space is mine.

Thank you for being patient with me while I took a few months off the home tour, I hope you enjoyed the revival.
