When the clock strikes midnight on August 31st, women all over the world break out the totes of fall decor and begin the transition. I’m definitely guilty of this, but this year was a little slower to pull the trigger. It is easy to become overwhelmed with holiday decorating, so we’re going to go over the simple ways to decorate for fall.
Fall and Halloween decorating are one in the same for me. Once I bring out the leaves and pumpkins, the ghosts are coming out too. This is mostly because if I don’t put them out at the same time, I will never go back and get them.
I’ve never spent a lot of money on decorations for fall. Most of the stuff I use has come from Walmart, Target dollar spot, Dollar Tree, and Big Lots. I can be very cheap when it comes to things that aren’t going to be year round decor investments. I also don’t add fall decor to every space in our house. Let’s look at how I’ve created a fall look to some of our common areas.
Switch out your regular decor
This three tiered stand is one of the first places I start adding holiday decor throughout the year. It sits on the center of our kitchen island and is a focal point from all entrances. Trading out the usual pieces for fall and Halloween touches is the one of the easiest ways to make it start to feel like the seasons are changing. The tiered stand is filled with a collection of things we’ve gathered over the multiple moves and multiple years we’ve shared together.
Dining areas
Our kitchen counter placemats, breakfast table napkins, and centerpieces all change as the seasons cycle through. These placemats were picked up from Walmart last year for about $2 each and add the perfect amount of seasonal spirit. The opposite side is a little less busy and says ‘give thanks’, I will flip them over as we lead into Thanksgiving. The napkins are usually a solid cream color, but have been switched out for these festive colored ones. They came in a set of four for $5 at HomeGoods last week. Fresh blooms fill the center of our table with a few fall touches, and our lanterns are filled with a pumpkin/acorn filler from Walmart for $4 a bag.
Fireplace mantle
If you have a fireplace that is a focal point in your home, USE IT! I swap out the mantle decor as well as the hearth. From hanging banners to changing the faux florals in the vases, it is one of the most eye catching spots for adding holiday decor.
Like I said before, I do not add an overwhelming amount of fall decor to our home. Not because I don’t like it, but because we have a pretty colorful home already. There’s only so much more orange and red you can add when you have a huge red sectional couch in the room. The faux florals are from Walmart for $5 a stem and the banner was a Target dollar spot pickup from last year.
Misc. spots throughout
From our entertainment stand to the coffee table and many other miscellaneous spots throughout the house, I add a few things here and there. I added these consignment sale pumpkins to our coffee table with my favorite fall candle + holder. The faux blooms and ‘hello fall’ sign from my favorite small shop, Ebenezer Market (linked here), were added to the entertainment stand. After putting in the time to diy door wreaths, I cannot bring myself to throw them away. I hung a previous years wreath on the french doors into our kitchen as well as the newest wreath on our front door. Adding a ‘harvest sign’ and fall printable to our countertop gave us a warm feel without over cluttering.
There is still some of our decor that I didn’t grab a picture of. Since I don’t overdo the fall and Halloween, I didn’t want to overdo the post. This gives you an idea of how simple and easy it is to add fall to your home without having to look like the aisles of Target exploded everywhere.
