The first house we ever bought was simple. There were no formal living rooms, dining rooms, and offices. Just a house with basic spaces. Then we moved into our second house and it had them all – an office, a formal living and dining room. I had no idea what I was going to do. These weren’t spaces that I had ever had to decorate before. After putting a lot of thought into it, I found my vision.
Now we’re in home number three, we were sure to buy a house with all of the things. The formal living room was the first space I shared on the blog, you can find that here. However the dining room has taken a little longer due to finding the perfect area rug, as well as deciding how to decorate one extra large wall.
This dining set and matching buffet was purchased for the previous home and fit perfectly into this one. A few miscellaneous pieces were picked up around the house and here you have it – the fully finished formal dining room.
We replaced the very outdated existing light fixture with this Lorenzi 4 light chandelier which I spoke more about here. Linea Lighting has provided many beautiful light fixtures for our home and I’m so happy with every one of them. This one specifically is so simple and still manage to makes such a statement in here.
The hardest piece to add to this room was the area rug. I wanted something that flowed well, but didn’t overpower the color scheme at all. Well Woven was kind enough to send over the Kian Cream Vintage Panel Distressed rug and it is perfect. There is just enough blue, green, and creams to tie it into the room without taking over completely.
One of the most difficult design projects I’ve ever completed has been the basket wall. I’ve seen so many beautiful ones, but struggled on how to get started in creating my own. Then one day I just bought some baskets and laid them out to see how it was coming together. I picked up baskets from Hobby Lobby, HomeGoods, Marshall’s, and Goodwill as well as placements from Pottery Barn, Hobby Lobby, and IKEA. Before I could commit to hanging them, I made sure to plan the layout and photograph to create the same design on the wall. I’m over the moon about the final product.
In most cases a formal dining room does not get used on a daily basis. It is more of a room for show, for holiday meals and special occasions. Since we moved into our new home, the table in the kitchen seats only four people. Now anytime we have a guest we have an excuse to use the ‘fancy room’ as the kids like to call it.
