Making a spooky and festive kids boo basket

The first day of October is such an exciting day! It’s the beginning of spooky and scary, pumpkins and skeletons, ghosts and goblins, plus so much more. With my love for October and Halloween, I celebrate it as though it’s a holiday! This means gifting the kids a ‘boo basket’ to kick off this season. I rounded up all goodies for making a spooky and festive kids boo basket. The goodies are rounded up over time and put together to gift at once. Here is an example of boo baskets from a previous year.

Over the years I have created a pretty specific guideline for our boo baskets. I have narrowed down what my kids do/don’t like and what they will/won’t use. Because of this I stick with things like pajamas, activity books, and reading books combined with a holiday version of their favorite toys (hot wheels, squishmallows, legos, etc). You would be surprised how many of your favorite brands launch seasonal versions each year.

The wicker pumpkin baskets are from HomeGoods a year or two ago. I like to reuse baskets that we already have then put them away for the following year. I will likely put away the tumblers and bring them back out next year also. I’m not above regifting – especially with seasonal things that they won’t use again until the following year.

I have dialed back the amount of seasonal pajamas and books that I grab each year. With chapter books/graphic novels they’re less likely to read as quickly as they would picture books so I don’t overload our shelves or my bank account. The pajama selection as the kids get older has slimmed down which has helped me to limit the spending there also. This can also include yummy snacks for a movie night or special treat like I have rounded up here.

This is my way to bring excitement to the upcoming season/holiday, but it’s in NO WAY a requirement. Not everyone likes this idea, wants to gift more than necessary, etc. What works for some will not work for all. Don’t ever feel obligated to participate in something that doesn’t work for you and your family. I’m sharing this concept, but it’s not the only way to celebrate the Halloween excitement.
